Features
The Lynton healthcare chair comes with a range of key features to aid pressure management, postural control, and comfort. The key features listed below are standard, you can purchase additional features and these are detailed in the Optional Accessories Section or discuss with your local MMS Medical Product Specialist
Mechanisms
The Lynton healthcare chair is available with either a Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) or a Single Tilt in Space (STIS) mechanism. The Tilt in Space (TIS) movement allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards which prevents shearing and friction.
The Dual Tilt in Space mechanism has more positional movement options than the STIS one as it also has independent backrest recline and independent leg rest movement. This enables a greater range of positions to aid pressure management, postural control and comfort.
There is also the option of VAL Technology on both these mechanisms, but only on the medium and large sized chairs.
For further details on these mechanisms, with video clips, visit the Mechanism Section. |

Optional Accessories
The following features can be purchased to enhance the functionality of the chair.
Seat Depth Adjustment Pad
The Lynton has two additional seat depth adjuster pads available to purchase to give you even more flexibility to adjust the chair. These can be used to achieve further adjustments by using them to alter the seat depth with a choice of two sets of detachable adjuster pads, 25.4mm (1″)or 50.8mm (2″). The below Seat depth chart shows the flexibility available.
The seat depth should be long enough to support the upper part of the legs whilst allowing the back to rest comfortably on the backrest. If the seat is too long the user is likely to slouch in the chair to get their feet
on the floor, which puts extra pressure on their lower spine, if too short it will cause additional pressure on the thighs risking potential skin breakdown. |

Back Cushion Options
There is a choice of four interchangeable pressure management back cushions each with different features that enable the chair to be adapted to a single user’s changing needs or to adapt the chair to another user. This ensures greater longevity of its usage.
In addition, all cushions can be repositioned to suit a user’s individual seating preferences and allows for the fibre to be added or removed from fibre filled cushions to adjust the firmness. Covers can also be removed for cleaning.
Waterfall
Individual fibre filled waterfall cushions, each of which are fully adjustable to accommodate maximum postural support. The waterfall back can be useful for those with mild Kyphosis, Scoliosis and reduced muscle mass on their back.
Support Lateral
A foam filled back providing firmer lateral support with a soft fibre filled headrest. The firm lateral support maintains midline trunk alignment which can be useful for those post Stroke or early to mid-stages of neurological conditions.
Adjustable Support Lateral
An adjustable structured foam filled back providing firmer lateral support with a soft fibre filled headrest. The firm lateral support maintains midline trunk alignment giving more lateral support and mild positioning. This can be useful for those post Stroke or early to mid-stages of neurological conditions.
T back (using Waterfall back)
A T back style can be achieved by using the waterfall back cushions. The middle and bottom waterfall can easily be removed and rotated sidewards allowing the T shape to be formed. The T back can be useful for those with mild Kyphosis, Scoliosis and reduced muscle mass on their back.
Seat Cushion Options
There is a choice of four pressure management seat cushions each with different features.
The cushion you choose can be removed and interchanged with one of the other seat cushion options. You can purchase one or more cushions to support the different needs of individuals who may use this chair. Cushions and covers are removable for cleaning and replacement.
With all pressure management seat cushions, they will be covered in a fabric with four way stretch properties to aid the reduction of shear and friction by Dartex.
Easiform
For standard seating, our softest foam cushion with high quality Reflex foam filler for gentle comfort.
Viscoform
For those who have good posture and mobility but are seated for greater than one hour at a time and require pressure relief and supported comfort. This cushion has a high-density foam base which offers a supportive and firm seat base with a top layer of memory foam to allow immersion into the cushion, giving stability and a large surface area to reduce pressure levels.
Liquiform
For those who have good posture and mobility but sit for long periods of time and require pressure relief and supported comfort. Recommended for people with limited muscle bulk or at risk of excessive weight loss. This cushion has a high-density foam which offers a supportive and firm seat base. The foam is topped with a fluid liquid gel in a soft silicone cover which provides a high level of pressure relief. The liquid gel helps to dissipate heat and constantly adapts to the user’s movement.
Dynaform
For those at very high risk of developing pressure sores or a history of sores where the highest priority is to prevent further pressure damage. The Dynaform cushion is a dynamic alternating air cushion, which constantly changes the air levels within its air cells to recreate the effect of normal body movements, which provides constant pressure redistribution to prevent pressure build up.
Minimum weight of user 40 kg (6 stone 4lbs)
Maximum weight of user 121 kg (19 stone)
Headrest Cushion Options
There is a choice of 5 detachable headrests all attached with a weighted tab.
Head Roll
The head roll is useful to reduce depth for anyone with reduced neck extension or needing to keep their head in a neutral position for tasks such as eating or drinking whilst maximising comfort and reducing effort.
Small Head Pillow
The small head pillow provides additional comfort for those who may require a softer surface to rest on whilst stopping hyper-extension at the neck when reclined or tilted.
Small Profile Headrest
Similar to the large profile headrest but support is focused more on the head and neck.
Large Profile Headrest
This headrest provides a combination of lateral support at the head, neck and shoulders whilst offering additional comfort and reducing neck extension.
Midline Headrest
The midline headrest provides postural support for those with some form of midline deficit, following a stroke resulting in proprioceptive deficit or unilateral neglect for example. It is also useful for those with reduced lateral muscle strength or tolerance (such as sternocleinomastoid).
Mechanisms
The most important aspect to consider before purchasing the Lynton chair are the seating positions that are required to aid the conditions of the client and address any pressure and postural management needs.
The Lynton is available with either a Dual Tilt in Space (DTIS) or Single Tilt in Space (STIS) mechanism.
Dual and Single Tilt in Space
DTIS and STIS (Common features)
The Tilt in Space movement features on both these mechanisms. It allows the seat to back angle to remain the same whilst the whole seating system is tilted backwards. This ensures that the angle of the hips, knees and ankles remain unaffected and the weight on the Ischial Tuberosities is reduced by redistributing the weight through the back. This constant angle also prevents shear and friction during movement.
This feature can also help when transferring someone in a sling as it can support better pelvic positioning by using gravity to position the user in the back of the chair in the optimal position.
Both these mechanisms have a rise position. As the chair rises the seat tilts forward slightly, transferring the weight to the knees whilst taking away the pressure from your hips thus allowing you to walk away more easily from the chair. The seat angle can be changed to provide further support by choosing the VAL Technology.
Dual Tilt In Space
Single Tilt In Space
DTIS (Only)
As well as the Tilt in Space and Rise functions, described above, the Dual Tilt in Space mechanism also features an independent backrest recline and independent leg rest movement:
- The independent recline allows the user to maintain flexibility over their body’s position, particularly the amount of hip flexion, enabling them to maximise comfort as well as managing health needs.
- The independent leg rest offers the user additional flexibility over positioning, allowing them to either use it in conjunction with the recline feature to create the optimal posture for their body shape.
VAL Technology
An optional mechanism can be fitted under the chair that allows the rise angle to be set to support individuals to a standing position. Choose from three positions 10º, 20º or 30º. The higher the angle the lower the front of the chair becomes, providing more support when moving from a sitting to a standing position. A simple pin system allows you to set the angle required.
